Framed Photos From Science Photo Library
Prof. Peter Higgs
British theoretical physicist Professor Peter Higgs (b. 1929). In 1964, Higgs predicted the existence of a new type of fundamental particle, commonly called the Higgs boson. This particle is required by many of the current Grand Unified Theories (or GUTs) which hope to explain three of the fundamental forces (electromagnetism, the weak & the strong nuclear forces) in a single unified theory. The Higgs boson is yet to be detected experimentally. Higgs is professor of theoretical physics at Edinburgh University. This photograph was taken at his office in Edinburgh in 1988 and is composited with a simulated Higgs Event such as might be seen in the CMS detector of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, the European Particle Physics Laboratory

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the renowned British theoretical physicist, Professor Peter Higgs, in his office at Edinburgh University back in 1988. Prof. Higgs, born in 1929, is widely recognized as the brilliant mind behind the prediction of a groundbreaking particle known as the Higgs boson. This elusive particle plays a crucial role in various Grand Unified Theories (GUTs), aiming to unify electromagnetism, weak nuclear force, and strong nuclear force into one comprehensive theory. The photograph itself is ingeniously composed with a simulated Higgs Event that could potentially be observed within the CMS detector of CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Although this extraordinary particle has yet to be experimentally detected at the time of this image's capture, it holds immense significance for our understanding of fundamental forces and their unification. Prof. Peter Higgs continues to inspire generations with his profound contributions to theoretical physics. His pioneering work on the Higgs boson has revolutionized our perception of particles and their interactions. As an esteemed professor at Edinburgh University, he remains dedicated to unraveling the mysteries of our universe. This remarkable portrait serves as a testament to Prof. Peter Higgs' invaluable impact on scientific progress and highlights his pivotal role in shaping modern physics theories surrounding electromagnetism, nuclear forces, and beyond.
