Rising Earth about five degrees above the lunar horizon

This December, 1968 NASA file image shows the rising Earth is about five degrees above the lunar horizon in this telephoto view taken from the Apollo 8 spacecraft. The horizon, about 570 kilometers (250 statute miles) from the spacecraft, is near the eastern limb of the Moon as viewed from the Earth. On the earth, the sunset terminator crosses Africa. The south pole is in the white area near the left end of the terminator. North and South America are under the clouds. The lunar surface probably has less pronounced color than indicated by this print. AFP PHOTO/NASA / AFP PHOTO / NASA / HO

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, taken by NASA in December 1968, showcases the awe-inspiring sight of Earth rising above the lunar horizon. From the vantage point of the Apollo 8 spacecraft, our planet is seen suspended about five degrees above the moon's rugged landscape. The telephoto lens used for this shot allows us to appreciate intricate details that would otherwise go unnoticed. As we gaze at this image, we are reminded of humanity's remarkable achievements and our insatiable curiosity about what lies beyond our own world. The horizon visible in this photograph is approximately 570 kilometers away from the spacecraft and rests near the eastern limb of the Moon as observed from Earth. The sun's setting terminator gracefully stretches across Africa on our home planet, casting a mesmerizing glow over its surface. In contrast to Earth's vibrant hues, it appears that the lunar landscape possesses a more subdued color palette than suggested by this print. Notably, North and South America remain hidden beneath a blanket of clouds while Antarctica peeks out from within a white expanse near the left end of Earth's sunset terminator. This extraordinary snapshot serves as a testament to both human ingenuity and nature's grandeur—a reminder that even amidst vast cosmic distances, there exists an undeniable connection between celestial bodies.
