Under Windsor Bridge on the Irwell, Manchester, 1912 (oil on linen on jute)

5648388 Under Windsor Bridge on the Irwell, Manchester, 1912 (oil on linen on jute) by Valette, Adolphe (1876-1942); 48.2x61 cm; Manchester Art Gallery, UK; (add.info.: A smog-filled, hazy view of the River Irwell, seen from the riverbank with the Irwell Street Bridge (incorrectly identified as Windsor Bridge) overhead. In the foreground to the right, on the edge of the bank is a dark, solitary figure wearing a brimmed hat and knee-length coat. He is stood with his hands in his pockets looking out across the still water. On the left, a barge with a smoking funnel noses into the scene, about to pass under the Irwell Street Bridge on the right. The bridge is characteristic of the industrial era with open ironwork construction and arched sides. On the far side of the bridge is a second, similar barge; it's lights visible through the haze. The vessels are a known as a Mersey Flat, a wide variety of barge used for transporting goods.
This painting shows Irwell Street Bridge, Manchester, which crosses the river just below Quay Street. Valette must have mistaken the name, as there is no record of it known as Windsor Bridge. The view looks across to Salford. On the left is a Mersey Flat, a wide type of barge, used for carrying grain, cotton, coal and salt. The back view of a lone, silhouetted figure looking out prefigures similar ones to be found in Lowry's work.); © Manchester Art Gallery

Under Windsor Bridge on the Irwell, Manchester, 1912

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating snapshot of industrial life in early 20th century Manchester. Painted by Adolphe Valette, this oil on linen on jute print captures the smog-filled atmosphere and hazy beauty of the River Irwell. The scene unfolds beneath what was mistakenly identified as Windsor Bridge but is actually Irwell Street Bridge. Its open ironwork construction and arched sides epitomize the industrial era. On one side of the bridge, a lone figure stands at the edge of the riverbank, hands in pockets, gazing out across the tranquil water. The silhouette adds an air of solitude to this bustling cityscape. In contrast to this solitary figure, two barges dominate the foreground. A Mersey Flat barge with a smoking funnel gracefully maneuvers its way under Irwell Street Bridge while another waits patiently beyond it. These vessels were essential for transporting goods such as grain, cotton, coal, and salt during that time. Valette's painting showcases his keen eye for detail and atmospheric depiction. The composition foreshadows similar themes found in Lowry's work with its back view of a lone figure contemplating their surroundings. This artwork offers us a glimpse into Manchester's rich history and serves as a testament to both Valette's artistic skill and his ability to capture moments frozen in time along the banks of River Irwell.
