EDITORS COMMENTS
Inhabitants of Ounalacheka with their Canoes (Aleutian Islands), 19th century" is a captivating lithograph depicting the indigenous people of the Aleutian Islands in their traditional canoes. This image is one of 65 lithographs that were published after the historic round-the-world voyage of the Russian corvette Seniavin, led by Captain Fedor Litke, between 1826 and 1829. The expedition, commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I, began in Kronstadt, Russia, and traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. The lithograph was created by a team of skilled artists and scientists, including Friedrich Heinrich Kittlitz, Victor Adam, Godefroy Engelmann, and Leon Jean-Baptiste Sabatier. The image portrays a group of Aleutian fisherfolk gathered on the shore, some raising their arms in gestures of welcome or communication. The men are shown dressed in fur clothing, some wearing hats, and all are engaged in various activities related to their daily lives, such as fishing and hunting. The Aleutian Islands, located in the Bering Sea between Russia and Alaska, were an important frontier between the Russian and American empires during the 19th century. This image offers a glimpse into the lives of the indigenous people who inhabited this remote and rugged region, and provides valuable historical and ethnographic information about their culture and way of life. The lithograph, which is part of the collection of the Library of Congress, is a testament to the rich artistic and scientific heritage of the Russian expedition. The image, with its intricate details and nuanced shading, captures the essence of a meeting of frontiers and the enduring spirit of exploration and discovery.
