EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage lantern slide depicts the dramatic sinking of the German battleship SMS Bayern in Scapa Flow, Orkney Islands, Scotland, at 2pm on 21st June 1919. The end of World War I was drawing near, and the German High Seas Fleet was interned in Scapa Flow as a guarantee of peace. On this fateful day, the German sailors, determined not to be defeated or humiliated, rose up in mutiny and scuttled their ships. The SMS Bayern, a dreadnought battleship and the flagship of the German fleet, was the largest vessel in the harbor. In the photograph, the massive warship can be seen listing heavily to starboard as it begins to sink. The water around the Bayern is filled with debris and small boats, as sailors scramble to abandon ship. The scene is one of chaos and destruction, as the end of an era comes to a close. The photograph is part of The Keasbury-Gordon Photograph Archive Collection from Mary Evans Prints Online, and offers a unique glimpse into history. The Edwardian and Victorian eras are brought to life through this image, as the grandeur and power of the battleship are juxtaposed with the raw emotion and determination of the men on board. The SMS Bayern's sinking was a pivotal moment in World War I and a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during this global conflict.
