Martin Luther, German theologian
Martin Luther (1483-1546), German theologian and founder of the Protestant Reformation. Luther was born at Eisleben. Initially trained in law, in 1505 he entered the monastery at Erfurt and dedicated himself to the monastic life. He left in 1507 to continue his theological studies and in 1512 he joined the faculty at the University of Wittenberg. In 1517 he wrote to his Archbishop protesting the sale of indulgences by the papacy, the remission of punishment for a sin through giving money to the church. Luther condensed his objections into his 95 Theses which he posted on the door of the church at Wittenberg. This act is seen as the start of the Protestant Reformation. Luther was excommunicated in 1520 and declared an outlaw at the Diet of Worms in 1521. Luther translated the Bible into German and his hymns inspired the development of singing in churches

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Martin Luther, a prominent German theologian and the founder of the Protestant Reformation. Born in 1483 in Eisleben, Luther initially pursued a career in law before dedicating himself to monastic life at Erfurt's monastery in 1505. However, his thirst for theological knowledge led him to leave the monastery two years later and continue his studies. In 1512, Luther joined the faculty at the University of Wittenberg where he made history with an act that would change Christianity forever. In response to the papacy's sale of indulgences, he wrote a letter protesting this practice and condensed his objections into what is now famously known as his "95 Theses". These revolutionary ideas were boldly posted on the door of Wittenberg's church in 1517, marking a pivotal moment that ignited the Protestant Reformation. Despite facing excommunication from the Catholic Church in 1520 and being declared an outlaw at the Diet of Worms in 1521, Luther remained steadfast in his beliefs. He translated the Bible into German and composed hymns that inspired congregational singing within churches. This vertical engraved portrait showcases Martin Luther's resolute expression as he stands against religious corruption during one of Europe's most transformative periods. Todd-White Art Photography beautifully captures both Luther's intellectual strength and spiritual devotion through this striking monochrome image.
