EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Kate Meyrick, an Irish businesswoman and renowned figure of London's nightclub scene, is seen leaving Holloway Prison in 1928, following a six-month sentence for bribing policemen to overlook licensing law breaches at her famous late-night jazz club, "43," located at 43 Gerrard Street in Soho. Accompanying her on her release is her daughter, Irene, the Countess of Kinnoull. Kate Meyrick, also known as the "Queen of the London nightclub scene," was a pioneer in the world of nightlife, breaking the norms of the time with her daring and innovative approach to entertainment. Despite facing numerous prosecutions for breaching licensing laws, she continued to run "43" with unyielding determination, making it a hotspot for jazz music and attracting an eclectic crowd of celebrities, artists, and high society figures. Her memoir, "Secrets of the 43," was published in 1933 but was quickly banned due to its explicit content. The book offered a rare glimpse into the vibrant and often scandalous world of London's nightlife, further cementing Kate Meyrick's reputation as a trailblazer and an icon. Three of her daughters went on to marry peers of the realm, further solidifying the Meyrick family's position in London society. This photograph, taken shortly after her release from prison, captures Kate Meyrick's indomitable spirit and her unwavering commitment to her business and her family.
