St Jamess Park, showing the lake and the Island Bird Sanctuary
St Jamess Park, showing the lake and the Island Bird Sanctuary. It has been announced that Mr Hugh Edmund Watts, Chief Inspector of Explosives at the Home Office, has been awarded the George Medal for opening, examining and dismantling a large number of bombs that had been sent to prominent people through the post. When somebody, such as Mr Ernest Bevin, received a bomb parcel, Mr Watts would go out on to the island in a solid built concrete hut, clang a steel door behind him, and get to work on the bomb. St. James's Park - A Serene Haven Amidst Chaos
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print of St. James's Park takes us back to the tranquil days of 1940s London, offering a glimpse into a world that was both beautiful and tumultuous. The image captures the park's picturesque lake, adorned with elegant swans gracefully gliding across its shimmering waters. Nestled within this idyllic scene is the Island Bird Sanctuary, providing refuge for our feathered friends amidst the bustling city. However, behind this serene facade lies a tale of bravery and resilience. In August 1948, Mr. Hugh Edmund Watts, Chief Inspector of Explosives at the Home Office, was awarded the prestigious George Medal for his heroic efforts in dismantling numerous bombs sent through the mail to prominent individuals like Mr. Ernest Bevin. The photograph transports us to that very moment when danger lurked on St. James's Park island - an isolated concrete hut serving as Mr. Watts' workshop in defusing these deadly parcels. Behind him stands a solid steel door symbolizing his unwavering commitment to protecting innocent lives. As we admire this snapshot frozen in time, let us not forget those who risked their own safety during such challenging times - ordinary heroes like Mr. Watts who selflessly dedicated themselves to ensuring peace and security within their beloved city. Eric Harlow’s remarkable capture serves as a poignant reminder of how even amidst chaos and uncertainty, nature can offer solace while brave souls work tirelessly to
