EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic image of Martin Luther, a prominent figure in the Protestant church reform movement. The photograph is based on a portrait by Lucas Cranach from 1520 and was taken inside the Tower Church at Weimar. Martin Luther, born in 1483, played a crucial role in shaping the Reformation. His bold actions led to his excommunication by Pope Leo IX in 1521 and being declared an outlaw at the Diet of Worms. However, under the protection of the Elector of Saxony, Luther translated the Bible into German and went on to establish what would become known as the Lutheran Protestant Church. In this engraving, we see Luther's determined expression and charismatic presence that made him such an influential leader during this period. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth to his features while emphasizing his religious devotion. This historical print not only showcases Martin Luther but also pays tribute to Lucas Cranach's artistic talent as he captured Luther's likeness with great skill. Published in Dr HF Helmolt's "The World's History" this image serves as a reminder of one man's courage to challenge established authority for religious freedom. Overall, this print offers viewers a glimpse into an important chapter in Christian history - where one man sparked a revolution that forever changed religious practices across Germany and beyond.
