EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enigmatic figure of Michael Collins, a prominent Irish Nationalist and key player in the fight for Irish independence. Born in County Cork, Collins dedicated his life to the cause, becoming an active member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood and playing a pivotal role in the Easter Rising of 1916. Elected as a Sinn Fein member to the Dail in 1918, Collins quickly rose through the ranks and became a minister in the Republican Provisional government. Alongside Arthur Griffith, he was instrumental in negotiating the treaty that led to the establishment of the Irish Free State. Collins's leadership skills were put to test during Ireland's civil war when he took command and swiftly crushed opposition forces across Dublin and other major towns. His military prowess earned him respect among his comrades as well as fear from his adversaries. Tragically, just ten days into his tenure as Head of State, Collins met an untimely end. Ambushed near Cork on August 22nd by fellow countrymen who opposed certain terms of peace with Britain, he fell victim to internal strife within Ireland itself. This poignant image serves as a reminder not only of Collins's significant contributions but also highlights how deeply divided Ireland was during this tumultuous period. It stands as a testament to one man's unwavering dedication towards achieving freedom for his nation despite facing immense challenges along the way.
