In 1857 it was decided to augment the existing Gurkha regiments by raising another for service during the Indian Mutiny (1857-59). Initially, this was known as the Extra Goorkha Regiment, before being numbered as the 19th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry. In 1861 it was ranked as the 4th Goorkha Regiment and finally the 4th Gurkha (Rifle) Regiment in 1891. During the Second Afghan War (1878-80) it fought at Ali Masjid, the Bazar Valley and Jalalabad. Later the regiment fought at Kabul and marched with Major-General Frederick Roberts in his famous trek to Kandahar.

This print captures a detachment of the 4th Gurkha (Rifle) Regiment in 1891. The image, taken by an unknown photographer in India during the late 19th century, is now housed at the National Army Museum in London. The regiment's history dates back to the Indian Mutiny of 1857 when it was raised as the Extra Goorkha Regiment. It later became known as the 19th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry before being ranked as the 4th Goorkha Regiment in 1861. Finally, in 1891, it adopted its current name - the 4th Gurkha (Rifle) Regiment. Throughout its existence, this renowned regiment has participated in numerous significant military campaigns. Notably, during the Second Afghan War from 1878 to1880, they fought bravely at Ali Masjid, Bazar Valley, Jalalabad, Kabul and marched alongside Major-General Frederick Roberts on his famous trek to Kandahar.
