Apollo 13 Astronauts Practice Moonwalk at KSC, Florida, USA, 1970. Apollo 13 astronauts James A. Lovell and Fred W. Haise, Jr. during practice moonwalk at Kennedy Space Center. Lovell (right) operates Lunar Equipment conveyor, a pulley arrangement to load and unload equipment from the cabin section of Lunar Module. Apollo 13s original target on the Moon was the Fra Mauro region, southeast of the Ocean of Storms, to perform an inspection, survey, and sampling of the lunar surface, as well as to deploy and activate the ALSEP package, obtain photographs of candidate exploration sites and to develop human capability to work in the lunar environment. This mission drastically changed after an explosion of one of the oxygen tanks in the Service Module forced the Apollo 13 crew to abort the lunar landing mission and return to Earth

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness a pivotal moment in the Apollo 13 mission. Taken at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA in 1970, it showcases astronauts James A. Lovell and Fred W. Haise Jr. as they practice their moonwalk skills before embarking on their lunar landing mission. Lovell can be seen on the right side of the image operating the Lunar Equipment conveyor, a pulley system designed to load and unload equipment from the cabin section of the Lunar Module. This training exercise was crucial for developing human capability to work effectively in the unique lunar environment. Originally intended to explore the Fra Mauro region on the Moon's surface, southeast of the Ocean of Storms, Apollo 13's mission took an unexpected turn when an explosion occurred in one of its oxygen tanks within the Service Module. As a result, Lovell, Haise Jr. , and fellow astronaut Jack Swigert had no choice but to abort their landing plans and make a hasty return back to Earth. This photograph serves as a reminder of both NASA's determination to push boundaries in space exploration and also highlights how quickly circumstances can change during such missions. Despite not achieving their initial objectives, these brave astronauts demonstrated resilience and resourcefulness that would forever be etched into history books.
