EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage lantern slide depicts the final moments of the German Battle Cruiser Derfflinger as it sinks in Scapa Flow, Orkney, on the afternoon of June 21, 1919. The Derfflinger, a powerful warship of the Imperial German Navy, was one of seven battleships and battlecruisers scuttled during Operation Carlsberg, an event marking the end of the German High Seas Fleet's existence. The photograph captures the Derfflinger's majestic silhouette as it descends into the water, surrounded by a thick plume of smoke and debris. The scene is a poignant reminder of the end of an era, with the Edwardian-era warship succumbing to the waters of Scapa Flow. The Derfflinger, launched in 1916, was a formidable vessel, armed with a main battery of ten 28 cm (11 in) guns and a secondary battery of twelve 15 cm (5.9 in) guns. It saw action in several major naval battles during World War I, including the Battle of Jutland. The scuttling of the German fleet in Scapa Flow was a significant event in maritime history. The decision to scuttle the fleet was made by the German Admiral Ludwig von Reuter in order to prevent the ships from falling into the hands of the Allied powers. The operation was carried out on June 21, 1919, and involved the deliberate sinking of 52 German warships and submarines. This lantern slide, from The Keasbury-Gordon Photograph Archive Collection at Mary Evans Prints Online, provides a fascinating glimpse into this historical moment, offering a unique perspective on the end of an era in naval warfare.
