EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to 1934, when the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) sought to entice travelers with their train services to the historic city of York. The poster, skillfully created by artist Doris Zinkeisen, transports us into a world of adventure and folklore. In this image, we find ourselves amidst the picturesque Yorkshire countryside as renowned highwayman Dick Turpin races through on his faithful steed, Black Bess. Turpin's daring ride from London to York in the 18th century became legendary and was immortalized in Harrison Ainsworth's novel Rookwood. Zinkeisen's artistic prowess shines through as she masterfully captures Turpin riding at breakneck speed against the backdrop of majestic York Minster. The attention to detail is remarkable; every brushstroke seems alive with energy and movement. Born in Scotland and educated at the prestigious Royal Academy Schools, Zinkeisen was no stranger to creating visually stunning works of art. While primarily known for her stage designs and costumes in London, she effortlessly translated her talent onto canvas for this LNER poster. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing print from the National Railway Museum collection, we are transported not only through time but also into an era where tales of highwaymen captured our imaginations. It serves as a reminder that even today, travel can be an exhilarating journey filled with history and wonderment.
