Apollo 16 astronauts

Apollo 16 astronauts. Original film strip showing three photographs taken by US astronauts on NASAs Apollo 16 mission to the Moon. Apollo 16 was the fifth Apollo mission to land on the Moon. It launched on 16 April 1972. The lunar landing took place on 21 April 1972. John W. Young (bottom picture, jumping and saluting flag), and Charles Duke (top two pictures, saluting flag) landed in the Descartes Highlands in the lunar module Orion (left). They spent 71 hours there, testing their lunar rover (also at left), and collecting samples of Moon rock. Thomas Ken Mattingly remained in orbit in the command module. There were eleven manned Apollo missions, from 1968-1972. A total of 12 US astronauts walked on the Moon

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in space exploration - the Apollo 16 mission to the Moon. Taken by US astronauts, this original film strip showcases three remarkable photographs that showcase the bravery and scientific curiosity of these early pioneers. In April 1972, John W. Young and Charles Duke embarked on their lunar journey, landing in the Descartes Highlands aboard the lunar module Orion. The bottom picture shows John Young jumping with exuberance while saluting the American flag planted firmly on the lunar surface. In contrast, the top two pictures depict Charles Duke proudly saluting this symbol of national pride. During their 71-hour stay on the Moon's rocky terrain, these courageous men tested their lunar rover and collected invaluable samples of Moon rock for research purposes. Meanwhile, Thomas Ken Mattingly remained in orbit within the command module. The Apollo program marked a significant chapter in human history as it aimed to explore and discover our celestial neighbor like never before. With eleven manned missions between 1968-1972, a total of twelve US astronauts had walked on the Moon by its conclusion. This stunning photograph not only showcases an iconic scene from our past but also serves as a reminder of humanity's insatiable thirst for knowledge and exploration beyond Earth's boundaries. It stands as a testament to mankind's ingenuity and determination to unravel mysteries beyond our own planet.
