EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 6th or 7th century sandstone shrine, discovered in India or Southeast Asia, showcases the reverence and devotion towards the Four Jinas or Tirthankaras in Jainism. The Jinas are considered the spiritual teachers who attained spiritual liberation or Nirvana, and are believed to have lived in different eras. The shrine is adorned with the figures of Rishabhanatha (Adinatha), the first Tirthankara, Parshvanatha, Neminatha, and Mahavira, the last and the most recent Tirthankara. Each Jina is depicted in the padmasana or lotus position, with their legs crossed and hands in the dhyana mudra or meditative pose, symbolizing deep concentration and inner peace. The serene expressions on their faces reflect the attainment of Nirvana and the tranquility of their minds. The shrine is surrounded by lush greenery, with trees and plants growing around it, emphasizing the connection between nature and spirituality in Jainism. The intricately carved details on the shrine, including the ornate borders and the decorative elements, showcase the exceptional craftsmanship of the artisan, making it a valuable heritage artifact and an important piece of Asian art history.
