EDITORS COMMENTS
This intricately crafted figurine depicts Jina Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara or spiritual teacher in Jainism, believed to have lived between 850 and 900 CE. The exact origin and creator of this copper alloy sculpture remain unknown, but it is thought to have originated from Southeast Asia or India. The Jina is shown in the padmasana or lotus position, a symbol of detachment and spiritual perfection. With his legs crossed, he sits in a calm and meditative posture, his hands in the mudra or symbolic gesture of teaching. The intricate details of his clothing and the decorative elements on the base suggest that this figurine was once part of a larger temple or religious complex. The use of copper alloy, a valuable material in ancient India and Southeast Asia, indicates the significance and reverence accorded to this Jina figure. Today, this precious artifact is housed in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Asia and the enduring influence of Jainism.
